Call for Notacon volunteers

Posted on Sunday, March 13th, 2011 at 8:24 pm in Uncategorized by froggy

Notacon functions thanks to the hard work of it’s volunteers, who offer hundreds of hours of volunteer time each year. As we ramp up for Notacon 8, the call for volunteers this year is on! Kat and Tod have graciously agreed to corral and wrangle volunteers this year, so yay to them for their help!

This years event includes some new roles and responsibilities, as well more work to be done. Hence, we will need to recruit more people than previous years to make sure this year is a smashing success!

If you are interested in helping out, they have set up a handy little questionnaire to help them organize everyone. Also, if you haven’t already, please subscribe to the volunteers email list. Thanks in advance for your interest!

I definitely need to populate it, and if you haven’t contacted me yet to get on it, please do so! Feel free to email me at

Hotel block NOT SOLD OUT (yet!)

Posted on Sunday, March 6th, 2011 at 7:17 am in Uncategorized by froggy

There’s been some confusion as of late regarding the availability of rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn in Cleveland for Notacon 8. Rooms are still available! However, if for some reason you do not book under our hotel block than, yes, you will be told the hotel is sold out. Both Tyger and I have exchanged numerous frantic emails with the hotel this week to clear up any confusion. They have been extremely helpful and provide a direct contact at the hotel than you can call to book a room if the website isn’t working for you or if their reservations department is being finicky. That person’s contact information is located in bold print on our hotel and travel information page.

Also, you shouldn’t need to register for all four days our rate is good for (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday) to get the rate. If you have any questions, please contact the hotel. If they give you a hard time, then please contact us and we’ll sort it out.

We DO anticipate the hotel selling out and I will work with another hotel coming up this week. I want to make sure we sell out our rooms first, of course :)

Thanks for your patience and sorry for all of the confusion!

Speakers posted for Notacon 8. Book your rooms NOW!

Posted on Sunday, February 27th, 2011 at 7:00 pm in Uncategorized by froggy

Notacon 8 is proud to present our list of presenters. Out of a record number of proposals submissions this year, our content selection committee worked hard to select the best of the best. We hope you agree! The entire Notacon staff would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who submitted proposals to present. It is our pleasure to make difficult decisions when selecting among so many great proposals.

I wanted to take the opportunity to remind everyone attending Notacon to book your rooms NOW. I know many people wait until the last minute, but this year things are trickier. The special room rate of $99 will go away on March 23rd or sooner. If you are thinking about coming to Notacon, please book your room now so that you don’t get left out! There are Indians’ baseball games going on the same weekend as Notacon, and the likelihood of extra rooms is non-existent. Once our room block is sold out, it will likely be sold out for good! So please book your rooms soon!

See you all in just over 45 days!

Special Notacon presentation: Scanimate!

Posted on Friday, February 11th, 2011 at 3:50 am in Uncategorized by froggy

Long before digital computers provided a lot of the special effects and 5 o’ clock news cut-aways, there was a technology called Scanimate. Using analog computing and creativity, astounding and sometimes psychedelic effects were produced and used for decades. Only 8 machines were ever produced since it’s introduction in the 1960s.

David Sieg is a dedicated Scanimate historian who owns and maintains the last working Scanimate machine. He will join us at Notacon to talk about the system, it’s history and use. Mr. Sieg has also produced a couple of DVDs showcasing some of the Scanimate work done by others over the decades!

CFP closes at the end of the month! Also, a new addition to the Notacon family!

Posted on Sunday, January 2nd, 2011 at 1:27 am in Uncategorized by froggy

Just a reminder that you have LESS THAN A MONTH to submit your
proposal to present at Notacon. Still on the fence? Don’t think you
have what it takes? Take a chance and submit something, you never

So far we’re noticing some really interesting trends in the proposals
sent in thus far. Listed below are some topics that would really gibe
with what we have on tap already:

- Do you develop Android of iPhone games or applications?
- Are you involved in game development either in video or table-top format?
- Know anything about computer graphics, 3D rendering, or data visualization?
- Have any neat new talks in the realm of computer and network security?

Those are just a few of the many topics we think would be nifty to
showcase at Notacon and PixelJam.

Below is a handy dandy link to our CFP page.

Finally, we wanted everyone to know that there’s a new addition to the
Notacon family. Last Sunday, Tyger and I had our first child, Alexa
Eris Schneider! You can be sure that she will be at Notacon. Will YOU?

Notacon announces PixelJam demoparty. Remember to register and submit proposals!

Posted on Friday, December 17th, 2010 at 7:13 am in Uncategorized by froggy

Notacon is proud to announce the launch of North America’s newest demoparty, PixelJam.

Following the tradition started with Blockparty at Notacon, we decided that with the departure of Blockparty, it was important to pursue a fresh approach to having a demoparty in conjunction with Notacon event. The demoscene has long been on the cutting edge of the intersection of creativity and technology. As such, we wanted to support the scene by providing a new opportunities to demo coders and those at Notacon who are and don’t know it!

PixelJam will feature a total of 9 compos ranging from music to animation to traditional demos. Notacon itself has pledged over $1,500 in total prize money, with more prizes to be announced as we secure sponsorship deals. We are also dedicating 2,500 square feet of conference space to a coding lounge and projection space. This space will be expanded by an additional 3,000 square feet for demo screenings on Saturday night the 16th.

Finally, we want to remind everyone that our Call for Proposals is open through January 31st, 2011. Also, tickets are still on sale in our early-bird price brackets. Please reserve your tickets now before the price jumps!

More news coming soon, if you have any questions about PixelJam or anything else, feel free to contact us!
